LED Display Power Supply Replacement: Match the Part, Not the Label
The Short Answer: Match Six Dimensions, Not the Badge
A led display power supply replacement is correct when six dimensions match: functional, mechanical, electrical, software, configuration and project-level. Similar specifications are not a direct replacement, and ordering by the wattage in the product name is the quickest way to get it wrong.
Do this first. Photograph the label and record the model, the output voltage and rated current, the input window and the date code, then confirm the footprint and terminal assignment before ordering.
Where it goes wrong. Seven of the twelve Mean Well 5V models sold for LED cabinets deliver less than their name suggests, and some cannot be substituted on a 110V supply or where harmonics compliance is required. Both cases are decided by the label rather than by the price, and both are visible before anything is ordered.
One working rule. Keep cabinet load at or below about 80% of the 5V rating the replacement actually delivers. A common planning rule in the Chinese LED display industry allows two to three tenths of headroom, and the final design still has to be confirmed against the project requirements and the manufacturer’s specifications. The full directory sits in the Mean Well 5V power supply range, model by model.
Reading the Label Before an LED Display Power Supply Replacement
The label is the only document that describes the part you actually have; listings rarely carry the fields that decide a led display power supply replacement. Copy the four lines below exactly as printed, because they are the only ones that reach a quotation unchanged.

The four lines that decide everything
- Model line. Family, output voltage and series wattage, for example LRS-350-5; the series number is the family ceiling, not this unit’s output.
- Output line. DC voltage, rated current and rated power. The LRS-350-5 is specified at 5V, 60A and 300W.
- Input line. A selector window such as 90–132VAC, a full range such as 85–264VAC, or a 230V-only window.
- Date code. The only way to keep a replacement in the same batch as the installed units.
Terminal assignment is part of the label
On the LRS-200-5 the nine pins run 1 AC/L, 2 AC/N, 3 FG, then 4–6 as DC output −V and 7–9 as +V. The UHP-200-5 separates the sides, with a three-pin AC input terminal and a DC output terminal where pins 1 and 2 are −V and 3 and 4 are +V, at a datasheet maximum mounting torque of 5Kgf-cm and 8Kgf-cm. A different pin order means the harness must be re-terminated, so any led display power supply replacement starts at the terminal block.

The Wattage Trap: Model Number vs Real 5V Output
A series is named after the highest wattage any model in it can reach. The 5V model shares the family current ceiling and lands short, so matching a replacement supply by its badge repeats that error.
| Model | Series # | Real 5V output | 5V current | Shortfall |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LRS-200-5 | 200 | 200W | 40A | exact |
| LRS-350-5 | 350 | 300W | 60A | 50W short |
| LRS-450-5 | 450 | 375W | 75A | 75W short |
| LRS-600-5 | 600 | 500W | 100A | 100W short |
| RSP-150-5 | 150 | 150W | 30A | exact |
| RSP-200-5 | 200 | 200W | 40A | exact |
| RSP-320-5 | 320 | 300W | 60A | 20W short |
| RSP-500-5 | 500 | 450W | 90A | 50W short |
| UHP-200-5 | 200 | 200W | 40A | exact |
| UHP-350-5 | 350 | 300W | 60A | 50W short |
| UHP-500-5 | 500 | 400W | 80A | 100W short |
| NEL-400-5 | 400 | 400W | 80A | exact |
A cabinet sized on the assumption that an LRS-350-5 provides 350W has been running it at roughly 117% of its rating. The LRS-350-5 specification sheet and derating curve show 300W, and the LRS-600-5 drops to 90A below 110VAC.

Six Dimensions of Compatibility
Six dimensions decide compatibility: functional, mechanical, electrical, software, configuration and project-level. A supply with similar specifications can still fail the last four.
| Dimension | What to compare | Typical failure |
|---|---|---|
| Functional | Remote on-off, DC OK, redundant pairing | A wired contact has no equivalent |
| Mechanical | Case size, screws, airflow | Fan faces the cabinet wall |
| Electrical | Output voltage, 5V current, ripple, input window | Lower 5V current at the same wattage |
| Software | Monitoring interfaces, DC OK polarity | False monitoring alarms |
| Configuration | Selector position, parallel operation, trim | Selector left at 230V |
| Project-level | Certification, harmonics, batch traceability | Cannot be handed over |
Do the arithmetic as when sizing a supply against cabinet load, and check the peak figure against the screen power budget before you swap anything: a led display power supply replacement is judged on the loaded rail at the far end, not on the label.
When a Substitute Is Acceptable and When It Is Not
A substitute is acceptable when the real 5V rating is equal or higher, the input window covers the destination mains, the case and fixing pattern fit, the terminals can be re-terminated, and every wired function exists. Moving from an LRS-350-5 to an RSP-500-5 with active PFC and remote sensing, or to a UHP-500-5 fanless 400W unit, satisfies all six dimensions and adds capability.
Three reasons decide the other way, and all three come from the manufacturer’s data rather than from opinion.
Input window
A 230V-only unit cannot serve a 110V installation: that is physical rather than preferential.
Harmonics compliance
Where a tender or grid code references a harmonics limit of the EN61000-3-2 type, a family without a power factor correction stage cannot demonstrate compliance, which is a family property rather than a model property. No LRS or NEL unit can serve as a led display power supply replacement in such a project.
Redundant operation is an option
Two supplies of the same family cannot simply be paralleled to add current. Only the redundant variants carry that function as an option, and even then the load must not exceed the rated power of a single unit.
DC OK is optional on the UHP models (15Vdc/10mA on the 200 and 350, 30Vdc/1A on the 500) and remote on-off is built into the RSP-150-5 and RSP-500-5. A led display power supply replacement must provide any wired function.
230 V-only and PFC Traps
The input window decides the country
The 230V-only NEL-400-5 accepts 180–264VAC and 254–370VDC, so it will not start on a 110V feed, and its timing figures are published at 230VAC only. The four LRS models use a 90–132VAC / 180–264VAC selector that must be set before first power-up, and the full-range RSP or UHP families remove that failure mode.
Harmonics compliance follows the PFC stage
Every RSP and UHP model has a power factor correction stage and no LRS or NEL model does. The NEL-400-5 datasheet lists EAC TP TC 020 and no EN61000-3-2 entry, so swapping a PFC unit for a non-PFC one changes the installation’s compliance position.

Staged Replacement in a Live Screen
On a screen in service the risk is losing the baseline that shows whether the new unit behaves like the old one, so treat a led display power supply replacement as a staged operation.
- Record a baseline. Full-white pattern, 5V rail at the far end of a string, case temperature on a good supply.
- Isolate the section at the breaker, not by pulling the output connector under load, and inspect the terminals.
- Verify under load at the far end of the string, and compare with the baseline.
- Run a full-load thermal check before the section is signed off.
Field judgement practice documented by 找大屏 (WeChat public account, 2026) puts contact problems and thermal stability ahead of the supply itself among the causes of intermittent faults, and describes the method as swapping a cabinet to see whether the fault travels with it, and comparing temperatures against a healthy section. The method matches our field experience; the figures in that article are service practice without published test conditions and are not reproduced here as specifications.
If the rail measures correctly after the swap and the symptom remains, the fault is no longer in the supply, and another led display power supply replacement will not fix it. Work through symptom-by-symptom fault isolation, and apply the maintenance cycle for outdoor cabinets where the screen is exposed.
Spares Planning and Batch Matching
A replacement decision continues after the faulty unit is back in service: the spare on the shelf is the next unit you will fit. Plan quantity, family consistency and batch traceability.
- Quantity. Hold spares in proportion to the cabinets in the field, weighted by access difficulty: a 40-cabinet wall with two supplies per cabinet is planned with several spares on site (Illustrative).
- Family consistency. Keep spares in the same family, so the wired functions still exist on the spare.
- Batch traceability. Record the date code of every supply installed, per cabinet, so a batch problem shows which cabinets to inspect first.
Two commercial questions follow: the cost of a replacement at the same nominal wattage, and its expected service life, shorter than the age suggests on a supply that has run hot.
What to Send for a Matching Quote
Six items turn a led display power supply replacement into arithmetic: the model label, the terminal block pin order, the quantity, the destination mains voltage, the load per supply and the functions wired.
| Item | Why it changes the answer |
|---|---|
| Model label photo | Confirms family, output voltage and series wattage |
| Terminal block photo | Decides whether the existing harness can be reused |
| Quantity and destination | Sets the input window and the production batch |
| Load per supply | Sets the real 5V current required with headroom |
| Functions wired | Rules out families without DC OK or redundancy |
| Compliance needs | Decides whether PFC is mandatory |
If the harness has to be rebuilt, cabinet wiring and terminal practice covers conductor sizing and torque.
LED Display Power Supply Replacement: FAQ
How do I match a replacement power supply?
Read the label: model, output voltage, rated current, input window and date code. Match an equal or higher real 5V current and a compatible terminal layout.
Can I replace an LRS-350-5 with any 350W supply?
The LRS-350-5 is specified at 300W and 60A at 5V. A supply sold as 350W may deliver less at 5V, so compare rated current.
Why do seven of twelve Mean Well 5V models fall short?
Each series is named after its highest-wattage model, and the 5V model shares the family current ceiling. The LRS-350-5 gives 300W, the LRS-450-5 375W, the LRS-600-5 500W and the UHP-500-5 400W.
Can a 230V-only supply run on 110V?
No. The NEL-400-5 accepts 180 to 264VAC only, so it will not start on a 110V feed.
Is a higher wattage replacement safe?
At the same output voltage a higher real 5V rating runs cooler, if the input window, fit and terminals match.
Does an LED display power supply replacement need power factor correction?
Only where the project requires harmonics compliance. If it does, the unit must come from a PFC family: RSP or UHP.
Can I parallel two supplies for more current?
Only if the units are built for it: the redundant variants allow two units in parallel, with the load inside one unit’s rating.
What if the terminal layout differs?
Re-terminate the harness to the new pin assignment and observe the datasheet mounting torque, because a loose terminal is a heat source.
How soon should you verify an LED display power supply replacement?
Measure the 5V rail at the far end of a module string under full-white load soon after the swap, then check case temperature once the cabinet reaches working condition. Record both figures against the pre-swap baseline.
Why does the screen still flicker after a replacement?
If the 5V rail measures correctly under load, the remaining candidates are distribution, terminal contact and the control chain, and another replacement unit will not help. Re-check terminal tightness and voltage drop across the section first.
