Airport LED Screen Solutions — Engineered for Every Terminal Environment

High-definition, seamless, and creative LED backdrops tailored for luxury weddings and events

Overview — What Makes Airport LED Displays Different

Airports represent one of the most demanding environments globally for display applications. Display systems in this setting must remain stable, clear, and reliable—even amidst intense ambient light interference, continuous 24/7 operation, and extremely high pedestrian traffic density.

We provide customized LED display solutions specifically tailored for airport environments, addressing the comprehensive needs of every scenario—from indoor departure halls, boarding gates, and information desks to baggage claim areas, outdoor parking lots, terminal facades, and perimeter runway advertising.

Key Features

High Brightness

Airport terminals have large windows and strong natural light. LED screens need to be bright enough to stay readable in these conditions throughout the day.

Continuous Operation

Airport displays run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Reliable hardware and backup systems are essential to avoid downtime in a busy terminal environment.

FIDS Compatibility

Flight data changes constantly. Airport LED screens need to connect directly to the FIDS platform and reflect updates — gate changes, delays, boarding calls — without any delay.

Weather Resistance

Outdoor screens at airports face sun, rain, dust, and temperature swings. IP65 protection and a wide operating temperature range are standard requirements for any outdoor installation.

Central Management

A large airport can have hundreds of screens across multiple zones. A central management system lets one team control content, schedules, and monitoring from a single dashboard.

International Certifications

Airport procurement processes are strict. LED displays installed in airport environments are generally required to carry CE, FCC, RoHS, UL, and other relevant safety certifications.

    FAQs

The price depends on screen size, pixel pitch, and whether you are buying or renting. A standard indoor P3.9 rental LED wall starts from around $3,000–$8,000 for a typical 4×3m setup. Fixed fine-pitch installations (P2.5) for hotel ballrooms typically range from $5,000–$20,000+. Contact us for a custom quote based on your exact size and requirements.

For most hotel ballrooms and indoor venues, a screen between 4×3m and 8×4m works well. The right size depends on the venue width, ceiling height, and how far guests are seated from the stage. As a general guide, screen width should be roughly one-third of the stage width. We help every client calculate the best size before ordering.

P2.5 is the most popular choice for indoor wedding backdrops viewed from 3 to 10 m. P3.9 is widely used for rental setups and larger venues. For outdoor weddings, P4 or P5 panels offer good image quality at a lower cost. Smaller pixel pitch means a sharper image but a higher price—the right choice depends on viewing distance.

Yes. Outdoor-rated LED panels are weatherproof (IP65), built to handle direct sunlight, rain, and wind. High-brightness models (4,000–6,000 nit) stay clearly visible in daylight. They can be mounted on truss structures or ground support systems for temporary outdoor setups with no permanent installation required.

Buying is the better option for hotels, wedding venues, and banquet halls that host events every week — the screen pays for itself over time. Renting is ideal for one-time events or couples who only need the screen for a single day. For event rental companies, purchasing a set of modular LED cabinets and renting them out to clients is a profitable long-term business model.

Yes. LED screens support HDMI, DVI, and SDI signal inputs, making it easy to connect cameras, laptops, and video processors. This allows live camera feeds, same-day edit videos, photo slideshows, and streaming content to be displayed in real time during the event.

Yes. LED panels are fully modular and can be assembled into any width, height, or aspect ratio. Custom shapes — curved screens, arches, L-shapes, and floor displays — are also possible using flexible or specially designed cabinets. We support fully custom sizing for every project.

How to Choose the Right LED Display for Your Airport Project

Airport LED display projects are more complex than standard commercial installations. The wrong screen choice leads to poor visibility, integration problems, and higher maintenance costs over time. This guide covers the key factors to consider before specifying or purchasing an LED display system for an airport environment.

    Table of Contents

    Start With the Application Zone

Before looking at any product specifications, identify where the screens will be installed. Different zones in an airport have very different requirements.

    Indoor terminal areas

    — departure halls, boarding gates, check-in counters, baggage claim, and retail zones — need fine pixel pitch screens with moderate to high brightness. Viewing distances are relatively short, and passengers expect clear, readable text.

    Outdoor installations

    — terminal facades, roadside billboards, and parking areas — need significantly higher brightness and full weather protection. Ambient light levels outside are much higher than indoors, and screens are exposed to rain, dust, and temperature extremes.

    Special environments

    — Glass curtain walls, curved surfaces, and duty-free storefronts may require transparent LED or flexible LED panels designed for non-standard architectural applications.

    Choose the Right Pixel Pitch

Pixel pitch is the distance between the center of one LED pixel and the center of the next. A smaller pitch means higher resolution and sharper image quality at close range. A larger pitch is suitable for screens viewed from a greater distance.

Choosing the wrong pixel pitch is one of the most common mistakes in airport display projects. A screen with too large a pixel pitch installed in a close-range viewing area will show visible gaps between pixels, making flight numbers and gate information hard to read.

Use this as a general reference:

    ZoneRecommended Pixel PitchTypical Viewing Distance
    VIP LoungeP1.2 – P1.52m – 4m
    Boarding GateP2 – P2.54m – 8m
    Departure HallP2.5 – P46m – 15m
    Outdoor BillboardP6 – P1015m and above

For a more detailed explanation of how pixel pitch affects image quality, Samsung Display’s research on LED pixel density provides useful background on the relationship between resolution and viewing distance.

    Match Brightness to the Environment

Brightness is measured in nits. A standard office monitor runs at around 300 nits. Airport environments — especially areas with large windows or skylights — require much higher output.

    Recommended brightness levels by zone:

    • Indoor standard areas: 800 – 1,200 nits
    • Indoor high-ambient-light areas (near windows or skylights): 1,500 – 3,000 nits
    • Outdoor installations: 5,000 – 10,000 nits

Fixed brightness settings waste energy during low-light periods and can cause visual discomfort at night. Screens with built-in ambient light sensors adjust brightness automatically based on current conditions. This approach reduces energy consumption by up to 30% compared to fixed-brightness operation.

    Understand FIDS Integration

FIDS stands for Flight Information Display System. It is the platform airports use to manage and distribute real-time flight data — departure times, gate assignments, boarding status, delays, and cancellations.

Your LED screens need to connect directly to this system and reflect data changes instantly. According to SITA’s Air Transport IT Insights report, real-time passenger information is consistently ranked as one of the top priorities for airport operators worldwide.

When evaluating suppliers, confirm the following:

    • Which FIDS data protocols are supported — SITA, ARINC, RESTful API, WebSocket, XML, JSON
    • Whether the system supports multi-language display, including RTL languages such as Arabic
    • How flight data and advertising content can be displayed simultaneously in separate screen zones
    • How is the integration tested before the system goes live

    Require Redundancy at Every Level

Airports are mission-critical environments. A black screen at a boarding gate or departure board directly disrupts passenger flow and airport operations. Redundancy is not optional — it is a basic requirement.

There are three levels of redundancy to look for:

Signal redundancy — a loop signal architecture that automatically switches to a backup cable if the primary line fails. Switchover time should be under 0.01 seconds with no visible flicker or interruption.

Power redundancy — N+1 power supply configuration on each screen unit. If one power module fails, the backup takes over immediately.

Controller redundancy — primary and standby sending controllers running in parallel. If the primary controller fails, the standby takes over without any interruption to the display output.

Check that the product specification lists an MTBF (mean time between failures) of at least 100,000 hours. This is the industry standard for mission-critical display applications.

    Check Certifications for Your Market

Airport procurement processes are strict. In most countries, LED displays installed in public infrastructure need to carry documented proof of compliance.

    Key certifications to look for:

    • CE — required for projects in Europe and many other markets
    • FCC — required for projects in the United States
    • RoHS — restriction of hazardous substances, required across the EU and widely accepted internationally
    • UL — safety certification recognized in North America
    • IP65 — protection rating required for outdoor installations

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) publishes the standards behind IP ratings and many of the electrical safety requirements that these certifications are based on.

Always request the actual certification documents from your supplier, not just a claim on a product page. For a full list of certifications our products carry, see our Why Choose Us section.

    Consider Total Cost of Ownership

Unit price is only one part of the total cost. Airport LED display systems run for 8 to 12 years in most cases. Over that period, maintenance costs, spare parts, energy consumption, and after-sales support matter as much as the initial purchase price.

    When comparing suppliers, look at:

    • Warranty terms — standard is 3 years, with extended options for key components
    • Spare parts availability and shipping lead times
    • After-sales response time — remote diagnosis should be available within 2 hours
    • Energy consumption ratings, especially for large outdoor installations

Screens with lower upfront prices often have higher failure rates, longer wait times for replacement parts, and limited software support. These factors add up over a long service life.

    Summary

The key decisions in any airport LED display project come down to six points: define the zone, match pixel pitch to viewing distance, match brightness to ambient light, confirm FIDS integration capability, require redundancy, and verify certifications for your market.

If you are planning an airport LED display project and need product recommendations, layout drawings, or FIDS integration guidance, contact our team. We work on airport display projects across more than 30 countries and can provide a proposal based on your specific requirements.

Pixel pitch is the distance in millimeters between two adjacent LED pixels. Choosing the right pixel pitch for the shooting distance is one of the most effective ways to reduce moiré before it starts.

For indoor wedding photography at 3–8m shooting distance, P2.5mm or finer is recommended. At this resolution, individual pixels are too small for most cameras to resolve clearly at normal distances, which significantly reduces the chance of grid interference. Screens with P3.9mm or larger pixel pitch are more likely to cause visible moiré when photographed straight-on from close range.

If your venue already uses a larger pixel pitch screen, the solutions in the following sections become more important.

Even with a high refresh rate, banding can still appear in video if the LED screen’s output frame rate does not match the camera’s shutter speed. The camera captures the screen mid-cycle, producing a dark horizontal band that rolls through the footage.

    The fix is straightforward:

    • Camera shooting at 1/50s shutter — set LED output to 50Hz
    • Camera shooting at 1/60s shutter — set LED output to 60Hz
    • Video at 25fps or 30fps — match the LED processor frame rate accordingly

This is set in the video processor or LED control system, not in the screen hardware. A Novastar VX series processor or a Brompton processor provides precise frame rate and genlock control, the industry standard for professional wedding and live event productions.

Preventing moiré is not only about the LED screen. A few simple camera adjustments make a significant difference.

Shoot at a slight angle. Even a 5–10 degree offset from perfectly perpendicular disrupts the grid alignment between the camera and the screen. This is the simplest and most effective camera-side fix.

Open the aperture. Shooting at f/2.8 or wider introduces slight background softness that reduces the sharpness with which the camera resolves the LED pixel grid, without affecting the couple in the foreground.

Increase shooting distance. The further the camera is from the screen, the smaller the apparent pixel size, reducing the chance of interference. Shoot from further away and crop in post if needed.

Choose the right camera body. Cameras with a strong optical low-pass filter (OLPF) handle moiré better. Sony Alpha series and Fujifilm cameras are generally noted for better moiré performance than high-resolution bodies with no OLPF.

An overly bright LED screen creates high contrast between the screen surface and the couple standing in front of it. This forces the camera to either overexpose the screen or underexpose the couple — and it also amplifies the visibility of moiré and pixel structure in the image.

For indoor wedding photography, set screen brightness to 30–50% of maximum. Most Novastar and Colorlight control systems allow brightness adjustment in 1% increments without affecting refresh rate or color accuracy. Coordinate with the photographer before the event to find the right level for the specific venue lighting.
