LED Display Power Consumption: How to Calculate It per Square Meter

LED Display Power Consumption: The Short Answer

Quick Answer: LED display power consumption is quoted as two numbers, and confusing them is the industry’s most common sizing error. The maximum figure — every pixel at full white and full brightness — sizes power supplies, breakers and cable. The average figure — what the screen draws across a working day — drives the electricity bill.

Excel LED publishes the P2.5 indoor screen at about 600 W/m² maximum against 190–210 W/m² average. Estimate running cost from the maximum and you overshoot the bill threefold; size the supply from the average and it browns out on white content.

LED Display Power Consumption: Why Max and Average Power Differ

Specification sheets quote maximum LED display power consumption figures, and a maximum is a test condition, not a prediction: every pixel at full white and full brightness.

Average power describes a real day of operation, which is why it drives running cost. It is not a fixed fraction of the maximum: across the four models below, the published average lands between 0.27 and 0.44 of the maximum.

What you are sizing Which number Why
Power supplies in the cabinet Maximum Full-white content sets the peak current the 5V rail must deliver
Breaker, feed cable, generator, UPS Maximum The feed carries peak current, not the daily average
Electricity cost and annual budget Average You are billed for energy consumed, not peak capability

How to Calculate LED Display Power Consumption

Two routes reach LED display power consumption, and they should agree within about 10%.

Method 1: the module method

  1. Read the maximum current per module at full white and rated brightness.
  2. Multiply by 5V: 20 A becomes 100 W per module.
  3. Multiply by the module count, then add the receiving and sending cards.

Method 2: the area method

  1. Take the published power density in W/m² — maximum for electrical design, average for cost.
  2. Multiply by the screen area in square metres.
  3. Divide by supply efficiency to reach the AC load the meter records.

Chinese field-side guides use a third approach: a fixed share of the maximum divided by the scan ratio (WeChat account Lao Wang Talks Electrical, 2021). Treat any single duty percentage as a convention, not a specification.

LED Display Power Consumption per Square Meter by Pixel Pitch

Pixel pitch does not set LED display power consumption per square meter directly, but it correlates: a finer pitch packs more driver ICs into the same area.

Screen model Typical use Maximum (W/m²) Average (W/m²) Average / max
fine-pitch P1.25 indoor panel Boardrooms, control rooms 800 300 0.38
P2.5 indoor LED display specification Retail, lobbies, ballrooms 600 190–210 0.32–0.35
P4 indoor LED display Auditoriums, churches 450–550 150–200 0.27–0.44
outdoor P10 LED display, A960 Street-facing advertising 550 or less 170–186 0.31–0.34

Source: Excel LED published product specifications, 2026. Maximum is full white at rated brightness; average is a published operating figure. The P1.25 screen has the highest density because there is more electronics per square metre, not because it is brighter; the brightest of the four, the outdoor P10, is a common-cathode design.

What Changes LED Display Power Consumption: Brightness, Scan Mode and Content

Two identical screens can differ in LED display power consumption by a factor of two with nothing faulty.

  • Brightness. The largest single variable. Dimming to 50% removes most of the LED current. Chinese engineering practice documented by the DAV digital AV engineering network (dav01.com, 2026) describes indoor screens run in low-brightness, high-greyscale mode around 30% brightness.
  • Content. A dark menu board and a full-white product page pull very different current from one panel.
  • Scan mode. It changes the shape of the current more than the total energy: a 1/8-scan module lights fewer rows at once at higher instantaneous current.

P10 LED Display Power Consumption: A Worked Example

P10 outdoor screens are the case people ask about most. The 20 m² area below is illustrative; the W/m² figures are the published specifications of the A960 from Excelledisplay.

Step Value
Maximum DC load (550 W/m² × 20 m²) 11.0 kW
Average DC load (178 W/m² × 20 m²) 3.56 kW
Average AC load at 90% supply efficiency about 3.96 kW
Maximum AC load at 90% supply efficiency about 12.2 kW
Peak-to-average ratio about 3.1 : 1

That is a 12 kW feed for the electrical design and about 4 kW of average demand for the budget. Swap them and you either oversize the supply or trip the breaker.

From DC Watts to AC Kilowatts: Efficiency and Power Factor

Published W/m² figures describe the DC load of the modules. LED display power consumption on the AC side is larger, by the supply losses.

Why AC current is much larger than W ÷ V suggests

A supply with no power factor correction draws current in short pulses rather than a clean sine, so it pulls far more current than watts divided by volts implies. Two MEAN WELL datasheets show this at the same 400 W output: the NEL-400-5 quotes a typical 5 A at 230 VAC with no power factor row on its datasheet, while the UHP-500-5 quotes 2.6 A at 230 VAC at power factor 0.95.

Roughly 1,150 VA against 600 VA for identical useful output, and Chinese manufacturer notes put the power factor of non-PFC supplies below 0.6 (LianJian Optoelectronics, lcjh.com, 2019). Energy is billed on real power, so this does not double the kWh, but it changes the breaker and the cable — see sizing the AC supply and breakers.

LED Screen Electricity Cost: How to Estimate It

Running cost follows average LED display power consumption, not the peak figure: annual kWh = average AC load in kW × hours per day × 365, and cost = kWh × your tariff.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports an average retail price of electricity to commercial customers of 14.19 cents/kWh for the U.S. total in June 2026, in Electric Power Monthly Table 5.6.A released 26 August 2026. State commercial averages in the same table ranged from 8.02 cents/kWh in North Dakota to 48.05 cents/kWh in Hawaii.

Screen area Average AC load Annual energy Cost at 8.02 ¢/kWh at 14.19 ¢ at 27.33 ¢
10 m² 1.98 kW 10,106 kWh $810 $1,434 $2,762
20 m² 3.96 kW 20,213 kWh $1,621 $2,868 $5,524
50 m² 9.89 kW 50,532 kWh $4,053 $7,171 $13,810

LED Screen Power Consumption Calculator: The Five Inputs You Need

A useful calculator is not a black box. Whether you build one or ask a supplier, LED display power consumption needs five inputs and two separate answers.

  1. Screen area in square metres, on the visible face.
  2. Maximum and average power density in W/m², each with its brightness condition.
  3. Supply efficiency for the model fitted — 84% to 91% here.
  4. Operating hours per day and the annual brightness schedule.
  5. Tariff in cents/kWh, plus any demand or kVA charge.

Keep the outputs apart: maximum AC load for the electrical design; annual kWh and cost for the budget. Excel LED runs this against the model a customer is buying, because 150 versus 210 W/m² is a five-figure line item. Send the screen size, model and country, and Get My Power Calculation takes one message.

How to Reduce LED Display Power Consumption

  • Common-cathode architecture. The three colours do not share one rail, so each is driven closer to its own forward voltage. The common-cathode A960 outdoor series is published at 170–186 W/m² average against a 550 W/m² maximum.
  • Ambient dimming and content discipline. Dimming to the brightness the environment needs, and avoiding full-screen white, are free savings.
  • Higher-efficiency supplies. Moving from 84% to 90% cuts the LED display power consumption on the AC side by roughly 7% — the smallest of the three, and never a reason to accept an under-sized supply.

Sizing the Power Supplies Behind the Number

This is where LED display power consumption turns into a purchase order: the maximum sets the 5V current you need, and the average does not.

First answer: add up the maximum power of every module and receiving card, then hold the load below the supply’s real 5V rating with headroom to spare. Chinese display-industry guidance puts that reserve at roughly 20% to 30% of rated output, as an industry convention rather than a standard (dav01.com, 2020). A supply run without that headroom rarely fails outright; it surfaces later as intermittent shutdowns, and separating a power fault from a data fault is where the diagnosis starts. Verify final sizing against the manufacturer’s specification.

Second answer: check the label against the datasheet, because the 5V output is not always the wattage in the model name. The full comparison is on the Mean Well 5V power supply range page; two examples are the LRS-600-5 (500 W at 5V, 100 A, derated to 90 A below 110 VAC input) and the RSP-500-5 (450 W at 5V, 90 A, active power factor correction).

{'id': 11820, 'url': 'https://excelleddisplay.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/MeanWell-RSP-500-5-Power-Supply-Installed-in-Cabinet-with-Wiring-1.webp', 'alt': 'Mean Well RSP-500-5 5V power supply installed inside an LED display cabinet with output wiring sized for maximum LED display power consumption'}

A supply that derates inside a 55 °C cabinet loses the headroom you just calculated, so cabinet thermal design and the supply’s operating temperature range belong together. Where a project needs a specific family or PFC stage, compare them in choosing the right 5V power supply.

LED Display Power Consumption FAQ and Your Next Step

How do I calculate LED display power consumption?

Multiply screen area by the published power density, or add the maximum current of every module and multiply by 5V. Divide by supply efficiency to reach the AC load the meter records.

What is the average LED display power consumption per square meter?

It depends on the model. Excel LED publishes averages of 300 W/m² for a P1.25 indoor panel, 190–210 W/m² for P2.5, 150–200 W/m² for P4 and 170–186 W/m² for the outdoor P10 A960.

Why is average power lower than maximum power?

Maximum power is a worst-case test: every pixel at full white and full brightness. Real content leaves most pixels at lower grey levels, so less current is drawn, and the published averages sit between 0.27 and 0.44 of the maximum.

How much power does a P10 LED display use?

The outdoor P10 A960 is published at 550 W/m² or less maximum and about 170–186 W/m² average. A 20 m² screen draws roughly 11 kW at full white and about 4 kW on the AC side.

Does brightness affect LED display power consumption?

Yes, and it is the largest variable after screen size. Dimming to 50% removes most of the LED current, though driver ICs and supply overhead keep drawing. Low-brightness operation consumes far less than the rated maximum.

How many kWh does an LED display use per year?

Multiply the average AC load in kW by hours per day and by 365. A 20 m² outdoor P10 screen averaging 3.96 kW for 14 hours a day comes to roughly 20,200 kWh a year.

How much does it cost to run an LED screen?

At the U.S. total commercial average of 14.19 cents/kWh for June 2026, 20,200 kWh is about $2,870 a year. State averages ranged from 8.02 to 48.05 cents/kWh.

Do the power supplies affect the electricity bill?

Twice over, modestly both times. Efficiency decides how much AC power reaches the modules as DC, so moving from 84% to 90% cuts the AC load by roughly 7%. Power factor does not change the kWh, but it changes current and cable size.

Does scan mode change power consumption?

It changes the shape of the current more than the total energy. Higher scan ratios light fewer rows at once at higher instantaneous current, so cabinet wiring carries a higher peak.
