Project Overview

The screen faces a main arterial road and a pedestrian plaza at a mall in Dubai. The wall is positioned 8 meters above street level, angled slightly downward to catch both drivers and foot traffic. Our scope: panels, steel structure design support, a NovaStar MCTRL-class sending system, a Taurus media player for scheduled content, and on-site installation supervision for the first three days.

Client Background

The mall operator runs a portfolio of retail and entertainment venues across the UAE. This facade position had been sold to advertisers as a premium media slot for years, but the previous tenant’s banner signage underdelivered: static fabric signs are invisible at night and cost as much to change as a digital slot rents.

They wanted a digital facade that could be sold in weekly and monthly packages to brands — food and beverage, telecom, and retail tenants — with remote content scheduling and automatic proof of play.

Project Challenges

Outdoor facades in Dubai face a combination that few other climates match:

  1. Direct sunlight at noon. Summer irradiance in the UAE exceeds 1,000 W/m², and a screen that cannot reach enough nits will look washed out from 10:00 to 15:00 — exactly the hours with the most road traffic.
  2. Heat soak. Surface temperatures on east-facing facades can exceed 65°C in summer. Cabinets, power supplies, and module connectors all operate at reduced margins in that envelope.

How We Engineered the Screen for Direct Sunlight

IP65 protection, front and rear

The cabinet line we supplied carries IP65 front protection and IP54-65 rear options. We kept average power consumption per square meter within the outdoor series envelope (≤186 W/m² average on the ST960 platform class) and added active rear ventilation with thermal cutoffs. The screen has run continuous 16-hour days through the June-September season with no module derating or color drift beyond normal binning tolerance.
