P5 Indoor LED Display
5 mm pixel pitch · 320×160 mm SMD2020 module · 40,000 px/m² · 5 m+ viewing

A P5 indoor LED display is the mid-range indoor workhorse: 5 mm between pixel centres, 40,000 pixels per square meter, and a picture that holds up from about 5 m — the economical answer for halls, stages and large indoor walls where viewers are never close enough to need fine pitch. This page collects everything this pitch exists as: module sizes, cabinet sizes and every control system that can drive it, supplied factory-direct by Excel LED (LEGIDATECH).

Quick Answer: What Is a P5 Indoor LED Display?

A P5 indoor LED display is a 5 mm pixel pitch indoor LED video wall built from 320×160 mm SMD2020 modules.
• Module: 64×32 pixels (2,048 dots), 16S scan, 24 driver ICs, SMD2020 lamps
• Density: 40,000 px/m² — 5 m minimum viewing, comfortable band roughly 5–50 m
• Cabinet: 640×480 mm indoor die-cast cabinet (6 modules, 128×96 px) as the standard grid; 960×480 mm and 960×960 mm grids on request
• Typical build: 800–1,200 nits indoor brightness, 1,920 Hz standard / 3,840 Hz camera-friendly refresh
• Control: NovaStar · Colorlight · Huidu · Linsn — roughly one receiving card per two cabinets at 16S
• Best for: auditoriums, gyms, exhibition halls, stage backdrops, large indoor advertising walls

  • Bottom line for buyers — P5 is the point where indoor LED gets cheap per square meter. If your nearest viewer stands 5 m or more away, the extra pixels of a P2.5 or P3 wall are money you will not see.
  • Bottom line for engineers — a 2,048-pixel board on a 16S scan is one of the simplest, most serviceable circuits in the indoor range: fewer driver ICs, lower heat, easier spares.
  • Not the right pitch for — boardrooms, retail windows and control rooms viewed from 2–4 m: use P2.5 indoor or P3 indoor instead.
One-Stop Solution

One-Stop Solution of P5 Indoor LED Displays

One purchase order covers the complete wall — modules, cabinets, power, control and the drawings that hold them together. That matters more at P5 than at fine pitch, because most P5 projects are won or lost on installed cost per square meter, not on pixel count.

5mm

40,000 px/m²

A 5 mm grid gives you 40,000 pixels per square meter — enough for text, logos and video at hall distances, at a fraction of fine-pitch cost.

16S

Simple 16S Circuit

16S scan with 24 driver ICs per board: lower heat, fewer components, cheaper spares, and far less to go wrong over a 10-year service life.

640

Standard Grids

The 320×160 mm module tiles cleanly into 640×480, 960×480 and 960×960 mm cabinets, so wall size is simply a cabinet count.

Module Sizes

Which Module Sizes Does a P5 Indoor LED Display Use?

Two board formats carry this pitch in our production list. Both produce the identical 40,000 px/m² wall — they differ in board size, how many fit a cabinet, drive scheme and serviceability. Every pixel figure below is exact arithmetic from the pitch: 1,000 ÷ 5 mm = 200 pixels per metre.

Module size Resolution & dots Per cabinet Boards per m² LED & drive Notes & service
320×160 mm 64×32 px

1,024 dots
36 in 960×960 39.06 SMD2020 Legacy small-board format for repair matching and very granular module grids; double the board count per square meter.
The insight worth keeping: module size never changes the picture at this pitch — it changes the bill of materials. Density, cabinet resolution and viewing distance stay identical across the formats; board count, connector count, assembly labour, spare-part granularity and price move.
Cabinet Sizes

Which Cabinet Sizes Does a P5 Indoor LED Display Ship In?

640×480 mm is the standard indoor carrier for this pitch: six 320×160 mm modules in a 2×3 layout, 128×96 pixels (12,288 px) per cabinet. Every further grid below is built for a specific layout problem rather than for a better picture.

Why 640×480 became the indoor standard grid

The standard carrier wins on three counts. Module arithmetic: the cabinet divides into whole 320×160 mm boards with no cut strips. Handling: size and weight stay within what two installers can lift and align without lifting gear. Interchangeability: a replacement cabinet years later still bolts onto the same holes and takes the same modules.

Industry-standard cabinet grids for this module size (on request)

These grids are the ones the industry builds around a 320×160 mm module, and each one is arithmetic-clean — the modules tile with no cut strip. They are quoted on request rather than stocked, and the pixel figures are pure arithmetic from the 5 mm pitch.

The arithmetic you can do in your head. Wall size = cabinet count × 0.64 m wide × 0.48 m high (or × 0.96 m on the larger grids). Pixels = cabinet count × the cabinet resolution above. A 6 × 4 cabinet wall on the standard grid is 3.84 × 1.92 m and 768 × 384 pixels, about 7.4 m² of screen face.

Which cabinet form should you pick?

  • Standard indoor wall (auditorium, church, exhibition) → 640×480 mm: best price, best lead time, spares on the shelf.
  • Very wide low wall, or a stage backdrop → 960×480 mm: fewer vertical seams per metre of width, faster assembly.
  • Large hall or arena where the wall is meters high → 960×960 mm: fewest splices over a big area, flattest result.
  • Tightest budget, frame already exists → module-direct mounting: no cabinet cost, but front service only and no sealed back.
  • Curved or creative shape → the flexible 320×160 mm board on a curved frame, not a flat cabinet grid.
Control Systems

Which Control Systems Work With a P5 Indoor LED Display?

A P5 indoor cabinet is electrically ordinary: standard HUB75 module interface, conventional indoor scan, low-voltage module rails. That is why it accepts essentially every mainstream control ecosystem — the real decision is not “which system is compatible” but which family your operators already run, because sending cards and receiving cards must come from the same family.

The signal chain, end to end

  • 1. Video source — media player, PC, camera or streaming decoder.
  • 2. Video processor / sending card — scales, switches and packetises: HDMI / DVI / SDI in, gigabit Ethernet out.
  • 3. Transport — Cat6 for normal runs, fibre where the distance or the lightning risk demands it.
  • 4. Receiving card — roughly one per two cabinets at 16S (loading figures below).
  • 5. Modules — six 320×160 mm boards per cabinet, daisy-chained POWER IN/OUT and SIGNAL IN/OUT.

Synchronous or asynchronous control?

Question Synchronous Asynchronous
Where content lives Live source in the control room (PC, player, camera) Onboard storage in the cabinet’s player card
Updates Real time — what plays at the source plays on the wall Scheduled playlists pushed by phone app, LAN, 4G or cloud
Operators needed Someone present when content changes Nobody — the wall runs unattended
Fits a P5 wall Auditoriums and halls with live or switched video Advertising walls, lobby screens, scheduled signage

How many receiving cards does a P5 indoor wall need?

Two limits decide the card count, and the smaller one wins. Pixel capacity: one 640×480 cabinet carries 12,288 px, and a mid-range card such as the MRV336 loads 256×256 = 65,536 px at 60 Hz — that is 5 cabinets per card. Port loading: the same card has 12 HUB75 outputs, and a cabinet here needs 6 module feeds, so the ports allow 2 cabinets. The binding limit is 2 cabinets per card (the port count).

Practical rule for quoting. Plan roughly one receiving card per two cabinets at this configuration, then confirm the port map and loading figures with the platform you choose. We issue the exact card list with every quotation.
  • Redundancy — on revenue-critical walls add a second sending card in hot standby; a failed cabinet still does not take the wall down.
  • Remote management — NovaStar and Colorlight sending platforms report cabinet temperature and voltage and support scheduled brightness by time of day.
  • The one rule that saves the most money — sending card and receiving cards from the same family. Mixing families is the most common commissioning failure we get called about.

The architecture of each role — sender, processor, receiving card, async player — is compared in our LED control system collection.

Features of P5 Indoor LED Screens

Cost

Best Cost per m²

At 5 mm, indoor LED reaches its most economical point: fewer pixels, fewer driver ICs and fewer power supplies per square meter than any finer pitch.

16S

Cool, Simple Circuit

16S scan keeps IC count and heat low, which extends life in enclosed halls and reduces power supply sizing.

5m

5 m Viewing Floor

Designed for halls where the closest seat is 5 m out — stadium seating, exhibition stands, stage fronts and large lobbies.

F+R

Front Service

Magnetic front-service modules mean no rear access corridor is needed, so the wall can sit flush against a finished wall.

Pitch Math

P5 Viewing Distance and Resolution Math

Pitch sets the floor of your viewing range. Stand closer than the floor and the pixel grid shows; stand far past the ceiling and you paid for pixels nobody can resolve. At 5 mm the floor is about 5 m — which is exactly why this pitch is the default for halls and auditoriums.

Measurement Formula For P5
Pixels per meter 1,000 ÷ pitch (mm) 200 px/m
Pixel density 200 × 200 40,000 px/m²
Minimum comfortable viewing ≈ pitch (mm) × 1 m ≈ 5 m
Comfortable viewing band Pitch × 1 m to pitch × 10 m 5–50 m
Screen pixels Width (m) × 200 by height (m) × 200 3.84 × 1.92 m → 768 × 384 px
Worked example. A 3.84 × 1.92 m wall on the standard grid: 6 × 4 = 24 cabinets, 768 × 384 pixels (294,912 px total) — about 7.4 m² of screen face. At two cabinets per receiving card that is 12 receiving cards plus one sender or processor. Send us the wall dimensions and the seating distance and we return this as a drawing.
Applications

Where a P5 Indoor LED Display Fits

  • Auditoriums and lecture halls — the classic P5 job: rows start 5 m or more from the screen, and text, slides and video all read cleanly.
  • Gyms and indoor sports halls — scoreboards and perimeter walls viewed from across a court, where brightness matters more than pixel density.
  • Exhibition halls and trade-show walls — large branded surfaces built fast and struck just as fast; the low cost per square meter buys more wall.
  • Stage backdrops and live venues — mid-distance scenery and IMAG at a fraction of fine-pitch cost, with the 3,840 Hz option for camera work.
  • Large lobbies and advertising walls — where the audience walks past at 5–15 m and the screen is measured in tens of square meters.
  • Churches and community halls — overflow rooms and side walls where a 5 m viewing floor is generous rather than limiting.

Where P5 is the wrong answer

  • Boardrooms, retail windows, control rooms — viewers stand 2–4 m away; step down to P2.5 indoor or P1.86.
  • Outdoor facades and billboards — indoor modules are not weatherproof; use the outdoor P4 or P6.67 line.
  • Rental and touring — you want a quick-lock rental chassis, not a fixed indoor cabinet: see P3.91 rental.
Comparison

P5 vs P4 vs P2.5 vs P6.67: Which Pitch Should You Choose?

Pitch Density Standard cabinet Best viewing Choose it when
P2.5 indoor 160,000 px/m² 640×480 mm (256×192 px) 2.5 m+ Viewers come within 3 m, or the wall is filmed close up
P4 indoor 62,500 px/m² 640×480 mm (160×120 px) 4 m+ Closest seat is 4 m out and budget still allows it
P5 indoor ★ 40,000 px/m² 640×480 mm (128×96 px) 5 m+ Halls and auditoriums where nobody sits closer than 5 m
P6.67 outdoor 22,500 px/m² 960×960 mm (144×144 px) 7 m+ Outdoor billboards and stadium perimeters at longer range

The rule of thumb for the whole range: 2.5–4 m viewing → P2.5/P3 (P3 indoor, P3.076, P4); 5 m and beyond indoors → P5; outdoor at 7 m+ → outdoor P4 / P6.67; very long range → P10.

Pricing

How Much Does a P5 Indoor LED Display Cost?

There is no single P5 price, because “P5” is a family — the module format, cabinet choice, control platform and service mode move the number more than the pitch itself. In order of impact:

Cost driver Why it moves the price
Screen area and cabinet count Everything scales with area: modules, receiving cards, power supplies, steel and freight. This is the largest single line.
Cabinet grid and material The 640×480 standard grid is the best-value format; larger grids cut splice count but cost more per piece, and module-direct mounting removes cabinet cost entirely.
LED grade SMD2020 grade tiers (binning, brand, wire type) set brightness consistency and price far more than the pitch does.
Refresh tier 1,920 Hz is the indoor standard; 3,840 Hz adds cost and buys clean camera performance for broadcast and streaming.
Control platform NovaStar-class sending with remote monitoring costs more than a basic sender; async cards remove the control-room PC entirely.
Service mode Front service needs no rear corridor and usually reduces structural cost — worth pricing against a rear-service build before deciding.
Structure, install and freight Steel, lifting, commissioning and shipping are project costs, not product costs — quote them together or the comparison is meaningless.
We quote factory-direct against your actual wall dimensions, seating distance and cabinet choice — and we will tell you when a cheaper format does the same job. The table above is market reference logic, not an offer; the binding number is the quotation we issue.

We exhibit at international LED and AV trade shows and host factory visits: watch your cabinets spliced and aged before they ship, and meet the line that builds them.

03

Factory-Direct Pricing

No middle margin. Module grade, cabinet material and control platform are priced openly, so you can see what each upgrade costs per square meter.

04

OEM & ODM

Your brand on the product, your specification in the BOM, your drawing on the structure. Custom cabinet grids outside the standard list are quoted per project.

Support that continues after delivery

  • Aging before shipment — every cabinet runs a factory aging cycle and the wall is assembled and tested as a grid before packing.
  • Documentation pack — datasheet, module and cabinet drawings, port map, receiving-card loading sheet and the control configuration file with every order.
  • Spares stock — spare boards and cards ship with the wall and the same batch is held afterwards, which is what makes a five-year-old cabinet repairable.
  • Remote commissioning — engineers on video for first power-up, and remote diagnostics through the sending platform once the wall is live.
Projects

P5 Indoor LED Display Projects

Indoor P5 walls are normally part of larger rollouts — auditorium upgrades, sports halls and exhibition builds. Our LED display case gallery collects the recorded installations; ask us which of them run the P5 pitch and we will send the project sheet with cabinet grid, pixel count and site photos.

For a typical reference point on this platform: a 3.84 × 1.92 m wall is 24 standard cabinets and 768 × 384 pixels. Send us your wall and seating distance and we return the same calculation as a drawing, before any commercial discussion.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About P5 Indoor LED Displays

Q1 What does P5 mean on an LED display?

P5 means the pixel pitch is 5 mm — the centre-to-centre distance between neighbouring pixels. One square meter carries 40,000 pixels, and the display is designed to be watched from about 5 m and beyond.

Q2 What is the best viewing distance for a P5 indoor LED display?

About 5 m minimum, with a comfortable band of roughly 5–50 m. The industry rule is pitch in millimetres ≈ minimum distance in metres.

Q3 Which module sizes are available for P5?

The standard board is 320×160 mm with 64×32 pixels (2,048 dots) on a 16S scan with 24 driver ICs and SMD2020 lamps. A 160×160 mm legacy board (32×32 px) and a flexible 320×160 mm soft board are available on request.

Q4 Which cabinet sizes are available for P5?

640×480 mm is the standard indoor grid — six 320×160 mm modules, 128×96 pixels. 960×480 mm (nine modules) and 960×960 mm (eighteen modules) grids are built on request, and module-direct mounting without a cabinet is an option for frame-based walls.

Q5 How many pixels are on a P5 module?

64 × 32 = 2,048 pixels on the 320×160 mm board, driven by 24 driver ICs — arithmetic that matches the 16S scan in the factory module list (2,048 px × 3 colours ÷ 16 channels ÷ 16 scan = 24).

Q6 How many modules are in a P5 cabinet?

Six in the 640×480 mm standard cabinet (2×3 layout), nine in the 960×480 mm grid, or eighteen in the 960×960 mm grid.

Q7 Which control systems work with a P5 wall?

The cabinet uses the standard HUB75 interface, so NovaStar, Colorlight, Huidu and Linsn sending and receiving hardware all work, with VDWALL, RGBlink and Mooncell for front-end processing. Keep sending and receiving cards in the same family.

Q8 How many receiving cards does a P5 wall need?

Roughly one receiving card per two cabinets in the standard 640×480 grid: the card’s pixel capacity would allow five cabinets, but the HUB75 port count (12 outputs, six module feeds per cabinet) binds first at two.

Q9 How bright should a P5 indoor LED display be?

800–1,200 nits is the normal indoor range. Brighter is not better indoors: the wall is usually dimmed to a fraction of that, and an over-bright screen hurts contrast and lifetime. For windows or atrium daylight, tell us the ambient light and we specify accordingly.

Q10 Is P5 good enough for camera work and live streaming?

Yes, with the 3,840 Hz refresh option. At 1,920 Hz a wall can show scan lines on phone video; the higher tier removes them, which is why streaming venues specify it.

Q11 P5 indoor vs P4 indoor — which should I buy?

Choose P4 if your closest viewer is around 4 m or the wall will be filmed close up; choose P5 if nobody sits closer than 5 m and you would rather spend the difference on area or on a better LED grade.

Q12 How much does a P5 indoor LED display cost?

It depends on screen area and cabinet count, cabinet grid and material, LED grade, refresh tier, control platform and service mode. Send your wall dimensions and seating distance and we return a factory-direct quotation with the cabinet layout drawing.

Summary

P5 Indoor LED Display — One Pitch, Three Module Forms, Three Cabinet Grids, Every Control Platform

The P5 indoor LED display is a 5 mm pitch family, not a single product: the standard build is a 320×160 mm SMD2020 module with 64×32 pixels (2,048 dots) on a 16S scan with 24 driver ICs, giving 40,000 px/m² and a five-metre viewing floor. It ships in a 640×480 mm indoor cabinet (six modules, 128×96 px) with 960×480 mm and 960×960 mm grids on request, plus module-direct mounting when there is no cabinet budget. Control runs on NovaStar, Colorlight, Huidu or Linsn with roughly one receiving card per two cabinets, and VDWALL, RGBlink or Mooncell processing at the front end. Choose it when your closest viewer is 5 m or more away and you would rather buy area than pixels — factory-direct from Excel LED.
