What Brightness Do You Need for an Outdoor LED Screen?

For most outdoor locations, an LED screen needs at least 5,000 nits of brightness. In direct sunlight, the recommended level is 6,000–8,000 nits or higher. Standard indoor screens peak at 800–1,500 nits and will appear dim or unreadable outside.

Outdoor LED screen brightness is the one spec you cannot compromise on. Outside, a display has to compete with sunlight that can reach 100,000 lux on a clear day. Ref. 1: If the screen cannot produce enough light to overcome that, the image fades out — no matter how sharp the resolution or how accurate the colors.

This guide covers how brightness is measured, how much you need for different locations, and what other factors affect the final number. For a full overview of what to look for when sourcing a panel, see our outdoor LED display buying guide.

What is brightness, and how is it measured?

Brightness is measured in nits. One nit equals one candela per square meter (cd/m²). It tells you how much light a screen emits toward the viewer per unit of surface area.

To put the numbers in context: a typical smartphone screen runs at 500–800 nits. A consumer TV sits at 300–600 nits. Direct sunlight produces ambient light of around 10,000–20,000 lux in open conditions. Ref. 1: This is why outdoor LED screen brightness requirements are so much higher than those for indoor use.

The standard for display brightness measurement is defined by the ISO 9241-307 ergonomics standard, which covers visual display requirements, including luminance. Industry specifications for LED displays also follow guidelines from the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and the LED Inside industry database.

Nits vs. lumens—what is the difference?

Lumens measure total light output from a source, such as a bulb or projector. Nits measure brightness from a display surface at a specific viewing angle. For LED screens, “nits” is always the right unit. A lumen rating will not tell you whether your screen is readable in sunlight.

Brightness is measured in nits (cdm²). Outdoor LED screens require far higher nit values than phones or TVs.

Recommended outdoor LED screen brightness by environment

The right brightness level depends on how much natural light reaches the screen. Here is a practical reference table based on industry standards used by display manufacturers and installers.

Environment Recommended brightness Typical application
Direct sunlight, open sky 6,000–8,000+ nits Roadside billboards, rooftop signs
Partial shade, south-facing 4,000–6,000 nits Building facades, outdoor retail
Covered or semi-outdoor 3,000–5,000 nits Canopies, bus shelters, covered walkways
Night-only or low-light 800–2,000 nits Night markets, evening events

These ranges align with recommendations published by the Display Daily industry resource and are consistent with specs from major panel manufacturers, including Samsung, LG, and Absen. ref 2

If you are unsure which category your site falls into, choose the higher range. It is easy to dim a screen down. You cannot add brightness that you did not buy.

Direct sunlight (6,000–8,000+ nits)

This is the most demanding environment. Ambient light on a clear summer day can hit 100,000 lux. Ref. 1: To stay clearly visible, the brightness of outdoor LED screens in these locations needs to significantly outpace the surroundings. Browse our high-brightness LED display series for panels in this range.

Partial shade or south-facing walls (4,000–6,000 nits)

These locations get strong light for part of the day but not full sun all the time. A mid-range brightness level handles most conditions without excessive power draw.

Covered or semi-outdoor areas (3,000–5,000 nits)

Bus shelters, covered shopping walkways, and airport gate areas fall here. Natural light is present but diffused. Outdoor LED screen brightness in the 3,000–5,000 nit range handles these conditions well.

Night-only or low-light use (800–2,000 nits)

If your screen runs only after dark, you do not need high outdoor LED screen brightness. Running a very bright screen at night causes glare and wastes energy. A lower nit rating is the right call here.

Brightness requirements by application

Outdoor advertising and billboards

The billboard displays a face, open sky, and direct sun for most of the day. The Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA) recommends that digital out-of-home displays operate within brightness levels appropriate to their environment to balance visibility and community impact. For full-sun sites, 6,000–8,000 nits is the industry standard. See our outdoor LED billboard specifications.

Sports stadiums and scoreboards

Stadium screens are seen from long distances under bright daylight. FIFA and UEFA venue specifications for perimeter LED boards require panels capable of at least 5,500–7,000 nits to remain broadcast-safe under stadium lighting.  Learn more about LED screens for stadiums.

Stadium scoreboards 5,500–7,000 nits for daylight broadcast.
Stadium scoreboards 5,500–7,000 nits for daylight broadcast.

Retail storefronts and window displays

Window-facing screens deal with strong reflected street light. 4,000–5,000 nits is usually enough. West-facing windows with afternoon sun exposure may need more.

Retail storefronts 4,000–5,000 nits handles most street-facing conditions.

Events, concerts, and stage screens

Outdoor event screens are often used in the evening, which reduces brightness needs. For daytime festivals, 5,000 nits is a safe minimum. For hire and temporary setups, see our rental LED display for events.

Airports and transport hubs

These spaces mix indoor and outdoor light conditions. Screens near entrances or skylights need 3,000–5,000 nits. Learn more about LED screens for airports.

Other factors that affect the outdoor LED screen brightness include

Viewing angle and sun position

If viewers face the screen with the sun behind them, the screen needs to work harder. If viewers face the sun and the screen is in shade, a lower nit level is fine. Think about viewer position, not just panel position.

Screen size and viewing distance

Larger screens distribute their brightness over a bigger area. At very long distances, perceived brightness drops. Our guide on how to calculate LED viewing distance helps you match screen size and brightness to your site.

Content type

Dark or detailed video is harder to read in bright light than bold, high-contrast graphics. If your content is mostly video, aim for the higher end of your brightness range. If it is static text or simple visuals, a mid-range panel works well.

Climate and operating temperature

LED panels lose efficiency as temperature rises. In hot climates, thermal management directly affects how long a screen can run at peak brightness without damage. For wet or dusty environments, check the outdoor LED screen IP rating guide.

Does higher outdoor LED screen brightness always mean better?

No. Brighter panels use more power and run hotter. According to the U.S. Department of Energy Solid-State Lighting program, LED display energy consumption scales closely with brightness output. Running a screen at 100% brightness all day raises electricity costs and shortens component life. Ref. 4

The goal is to match outdoor LED screen brightness to the environment — not to buy the highest-rated panel available. A 10,000-nit screen in a shaded location wastes money and energy every day it runs.

See our LED display energy consumption guide and outdoor LED display lifespan overview for more.

Auto-brightness control

Most modern outdoor LED screens include an automatic brightness sensor. The screen reads the ambient light level and adjusts output in real time—full power at noon, lower output at dusk.

Studies from the U.S. DOE SSL program show that adaptive dimming can reduce LED display energy use by 30–50% compared to fixed-brightness operation. Ref. 4 For any screen running 12 or more hours a day, auto-brightness control pays for itself quickly.

Auto-brightness sensors adjust outdoor LED screen brightness in real time — cutting energy use by up to 50% compared to fixed-brightness operation.

What Brightness Do You Need for an Outdoor LED Screen?

Frequently asked questions

How many nits do I need for an outdoor LED screen?

At a minimum, 5,000 nits. For direct sunlight locations, aim for 6,000–8,000 nits. Night-only screens can use 800–2,000 nits.

What is the maximum brightness of an outdoor LED display?

High-end outdoor panels can reach 10,000 nits or more. Most installations do not need this. It is used for extremely exposed locations or signage in harsh sun climates.

Can an indoor LED screen be used outdoors?

No. Indoor screens are built for 800–1,500 nits and are not weatherproofed. They look washed out in daylight and can be damaged by rain, dust, or temperature changes. See our indoor vs. outdoor LED display comparison.

How does sunlight affect outdoor LED screen brightness?

Direct sunlight adds up to 100,000 lux of ambient light to the environment. If the screen cannot produce enough light to overcome that, the image fades. Higher nit output is the only solution.

Does outdoor LED screen brightness affect price?

Yes. Higher-brightness panels cost more to produce and run. Only pay for the brightness your location actually needs.
